Can you please share a little bit more about what exactly you do, for the readers who may not yet have come across your path?
I am on a mission to inspire parents to do better Mind, Body, Soul, Mama. Because our children are watching. As a mentor, positive discipline parent educator and cognitive behavioural therapist, I combine deep personal development work with powerful parenting tools and advice to guide mothers to a place they feel like they are growing alongside their children.
How did you find your calling?
I was single mum when my daughter was little and I was frazzled, exhausted, juggling a successful client base with being a mum and it was hard. I was miserable, my daughter was hard work and it was a tough time. I knew there was a better way so I started to research Positive Psychology. Child Behaviour and lots of personal development books, very quickly I realised that there was amazing tools that could change my life and support me to be a better person with a happier child.
I love the name “No mum is an island” as it can often feel like we are alone, muddling through, trying to figure it all out! How did this name come to you?
Initially, I started social media profiles to share my learnings called a Positive Parent but I think the name had too many issues with people worrying they had to fake positivity so after much brainstorming with friends I came to @nomumisanisland which I love. I was living in Ibiza at the time so the name worked on so many levels. I then qualified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and as Positive Discipline Parent Educator to bring structure to my new concept and share it with other mums.
“As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching to see what we do with ours”
It has really taken off, especially in the past year with so many of us with our children all day and really needing those extra tools and reminder!
I now have over 30,000 followers across Facebook and Instagram and get messages daily from people who have been inspired to make shifts in their patterns and the way they are with their children. That is my favourite bit. I recently did an Instagram Reels hugging my daughter with the words “ When you are hugging a child, always be the last to let go, as you never know how long they need it.” It got 11k views and I had so many messages from mums about it.
I love that post, such a simple reminder to us to slow down pause be present and engage! Not always easy when we are rushing from our work mode to teaching to parenting!
Never underestimate the impact an Instagram post can make. I did an interview this week and the lovely lady interviewing me said that after watching the reel she had tried it with her 9 year old son and there had been a real shift and he had become more tactile and was coming for more hugs. That is an amazing gift to be able to give a family just from an Instagram post.
My website www.nomumisanisland.com is filled with interviews with amazing mums who have upgraded areas of their lives from parenting to setting up their own business, from healthy eating to finding their happy place.
I now offer group mentoring programs for mums who want to do better. Mind. In a world where depression, anxiety, insecurities, and comparisons are the norm, as parents, we owe it to ourselves to take control our own lives, mind, body, soul, mama. By taking control not only do we change our own lives but our children can be shown a better way from early on, through simple, powerful tools that are available to us all.
You upgrade your phone and your computer so why not yourself? Combining this with powerful parenting tools and advice motherhood really becomes the perfect opportunity to be a better version of yourself!
What advice would you give to anyone looking at setting up their own business now?
For anyone else wanting to set up a business, I would say just go for it. Set up some social media accounts and document your journey to launching. People love to feel like they were early supporters of your business, that they have been here since the beginning. As you grow that will become part of your heritage. I love how the CEO of Spanx Sara Blakey (who was named in Time magazine’s “Time 100” annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world) shares her journey from selling fax machines to being a multimillionaire businesswoman.
One of my all-time fav posts of hers is here with her more recently impeccably dressed with her husband and 4 kids wearing odd shoes. She brings up her mistakes in life (in this case trying to work out which colour shoe looked best before dashing out the house forgetting all about it) and shoes she is human. That’s important in business now. Being transparent and real.
Then learn everything you need to learn and just do it.
Any wisdom or lesson you learned along the way?
My greatest lessons in business is to keep going, the people who are a success in business did not give up, they kept going through the hard stuff. every time I have got to a challenging place with No Mum Is An Island be it launching my website, running my free LIVE workshops or launching my Mentoring program stuff has ALWAYS gone wrong, (mostly the tech!) and I have been left asking myself what am I doing. The self-doubt kicks in and you just want to quit. That is the good bit! That is the bit that if you keep going you will see results. They say “It takes 10 years to become an overnight success” and I can see why.
